Kurdish languages
Kurdish (کوردی, Kurdî) is a continuum of Northwestern Iranian languages spoken by the Kurds in Western Asia. Kurdish forms three dialect groups known as Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji), Central Kurdish (Sorani), and Southern Kurdish (Pehlewani). A separate group of languages, Zaza-Gorani, is also spoken by several million Kurds, but is linguistically not Kurdish. Recent (as of 2009) studies estimate between 20 and 30 million native speakers of Kurdish in total.
The literary output in Kurdish was mostly confined to poetry until the early 20th century, when more general literature began to be developed. Today, there are two principal written Kurdish dialects, namely Kurmanji in the northern parts of the geographical region of Kurdistan, and Sorani further east and south. The standard Sorani form of Central Kurdish is, along with Arabic, one of the two official languages of Iraq and is in political documents simply referred to as Kurdish.
Classification and origin
The Kurdish languages belong to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family. They are generally classified as Northwestern Iranian languages, or by some scholars as intermediate between Northwestern and Southwestern Iranian.Martin van Bruinessen notes that "Kurdish has a strong south-western Iranian element", whereas "Zaza and Gurani [...] do belong to the north-west Iranian group".

Republic
A republic (from Latin: res publica) is a sovereign state or country which is organised with a form of government in which power resides in elected individuals representing the citizen body and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law. In modern times, the definition of a republic is commonly limited to a government which excludes a monarch. Currently, 147 of the world's 206 sovereign states use the word "republic" as part of their official names; not all of these are republics in the sense of having elected governments, nor do all nations with elected governments use the word "republic" in their names.
Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology and composition. In the classical and medieval period of Europe, many states were fashioned on the Roman Republic, which referred to the governance of the city of Rome, between it having kings and emperors. The Italian medieval and Renaissance political tradition, today referred to as "civic humanism", is sometimes considered to derive directly from Roman republicans such as Sallust and Tacitus. However, Greek-influenced Roman authors, such as Polybius and Cicero, sometimes also used the term as a translation for the Greek politeia which could mean regime generally, but could also be applied to certain specific types of regime which did not exactly correspond to that of the Roman Republic. Republics were not equated with classical democracies such as Athens, but had a democratic aspect.

Reception
Jim Martin observed in Terrorizer that "Republic? finds sHeavy rejuvenated, fighting fit and sounding vital and righteous beyond belief. Central to this unexpected rejuvenation is that this is no mere Sabbath tribute record. Although still firmly rooted in elephantine riffs, chugging doom-grooves and 70s shapes, Republic? marks a considerable broadening of this band's horizons, revelling in punkier drives and psychedelic expanses". While Alex Henderson also noted sHeavy's affinity for Sabbath, he said that Republic? differentiated itself from mere tribute due to "a sludginess that you won't find on Sabbath's classic '70s recordings - a sludginess that owes something to the Melvins as well as grunge".Blabbermouth's Scott Alisoglu praised the album for its "biting guitar tone, monster riffage, and a batch of cool solos make it worth cranking at top volume in the car stereo with a cooler of brew in the backseat", and suggested that "Unless you're looking for a reinvention of the wheel, there isn't much to bitch about on Republic?".

Republic (Transnistria)
Republic (Moldovan: Република, Republica, Russian: Республика, Ukrainian: Республіка) is a political party in Transnistria. Although formerly the majority party in parliament, at the legislative elections of 11 December 2005 the party won 13 of the 43 seats and found itself in the minority for the first time since the founding of the country on September 2, 1990. In the 2010 elections, Republic won 16 seats. The party is affiliated with former President Igor Smirnov.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Kurdistan in Eastern Kurdistan with Mahabad as its capital and Qazi Mohammed as its president. During the Second World War, Western Iran was occupied by the Soviet Union and Great Britain in 1941. The intention behind it was to create supply routes to the Soviet Union and to prevent Reza Shah Pahlavi from taking the side of the Axis powers. Beginning from that time, the Soviets supported the Kurds and Azeris to become independent from the central Iranian government. In August 1941, a general uprising wrested control of the Kurdish region from the central Iranian government. In the town of Mahabad, inhabited mostly by Kurds, a committee of middle-class people supported by tribal chiefs, took over the local administration. A political party called the Society for the Revival of Kurdistan (Komeley Jiyanewey Kurdistan or JK) was formed. Qazi Muhammad, head of a family of religious jurists, was elected as chairman of the party. Although the republic was not formally declared until December 1945, the committee headed by Qazi, administered the area with commendable efficiency and success for over five years until the fall of the republic.
Soviet and British forces occupied Iran in late August 1941, with the Soviets controlling the north. The Soviets were mainly ambivalent towards the Kurdish administration. They did not maintain a garrison near Mahabad and also did not have any civil agent of sufficient standing to exercise any great influence. They encouraged Qazi's administration by practical benevolent operations such as providing motor transport, keeping out the Iranian army, and buying the whole of the tobacco crop. They opposed the declaration of a separate independent Kurdish republic.
In September 1945, Qazi Muhammad and other Kurdish leaders visited Tabriz to see a Soviet consul on the backing of a new republic, and were then redirected to Baku, Azerbaijan SSR. There, they learned that the Azerbaijan Democrat Party was planning to take control of Iranian Azerbaijan. On December 10, the Azerbaijan Democrat Party took control of East Azerbaijan province from Iranian government forces. Qazi Muhammad decided to do the same, and on December 15, the Kurdish People's Government was founded in Mahabad. On January 22, 1946, Qazi Muhammad announced the formation of the Republic of Mahabad.
On June 1946, Iran reasserted its control over Iranian Azerbaijan. This move isolated the Republic of Mahabad, eventually leading to its destruction. They closed down the Kurdish printing press, banned the teaching of Kurdish language, and burned all Kurdish books that they could find. Finally, on March 31, 1947, Qazi Muhammad was hanged in Mahabad on counts of treason
In October 1958, Mustafa Barzani returned to Northern Iraq, beginning a series of struggles to fight for an independent Kurdish state under the KDP party, carrying the same flag that was used in Mahabad.
Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, Jr., grandson of the former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, wrote in "The Kurdish Republic of Mahabad" that a main problem of the People's Republic of Mahabad was that the Kurds needed the assistance of the USSR; only with the Red Army did they have a chance. But this close relationship to Stalin and the USSR caused most of the Western powers to side with Iran. Qazi Muhammad, though not denying the fact that they were funded and supplied by the Soviets, denied that the KDP was a Communist party, stating this was a lie fabricated by the Iranian military authorities, and adding that his ideals were very different from the Soviets.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Kurdistan in Eastern Kurdistan with Mahabad as its capital and Qazi Mohammed as its president.
During the Second World War, Western Iran was occupied by the Soviet Union and Great Britain in 1941. The intention behind it was to create supply routes to the Soviet Union and to prevent Reza Shah Pahlavi from taking the side of the Axis powers. Beginning from that time, the Soviets supported the Kurds and Azeris to become independent from the central Iranian government. As a result, Qazi Mohammed declared the foundation of the Republic of Kurdistan on Chiwarchira square on 22 January 1946, three days after the foundation of the People’s Republic of Azarbaijan. The Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran (DPKI), chaired by Qazi Mohammed, presented the government of the state, and a parliament of 13 members was formed.
The government was headed by Qazi Mohammed and had the following positions and persons:
President: Qazi Mohammed
Prime Minister: Haji Baba Sheikh
War and Defense Minister: Mohammed Hossein Saif Qazi
Interior Minister: Mohammed Amin Mouini
Health Minister: Mohammed Eiubian
Minister without portfolio: Abdul Rahman Ilchanizadeh
Transport Minister: Ismail Ilchanizadeh
Finance Minister: Ahmed Ilahi
Minister for Cultural Affairs: Manaf Karimi
Minister of Agriculture: Mahmud Valizadeh
Propaganda Minister: Sadik Haidari
Minister of Labor: Khalil Khosrowi
Justice Minister: Mullah Hossein Madschi
At the time of the foundation of the republic, more than 3,000 Barzani fighters led by Molla Mustafa Barzani came to Mahabad from Southern Kurdistan to join the republic and form its official army. The official national anthem was Ey Reqîb and Ala Rengîn (colorful flag) became its flag.
In April and May, there were several clashes between the Kurds and the Iranian army. However, these were initially ended by a cease-fire. This led to negotiations between the Iranian government and the Kurds with the participation of Great Britain. The negotiations did not lead to any results, so the Iranian troops kept attacking Kurdish positions. After the withdrawal of the Soviet army, the Republic of Kurdistan was captured by Iran on 16 December 1946. On 30 March 1947, Qazi Mohammed, Seyfi Qazi, and Sedri Qazi were executed on Chiwarchira Square in Mahabad.
According to Archibald Roosevelt (son of US President Theodore Roosevelt), the republic crashed because the Kurds were dependent on the protection of the Soviet Union. They did not have the material to assert themselves, even if there were plans to supply the Kurds with the necessary military goods. Another decisive reason was the disunity between the Kurdish tribes at that time.

This has left them vulnerable to the centralising efforts of each government. Subsequently, Kurds across the region have complained about a lack of ability to express their cultural rights and autonomy. Not to mention, there have been several episodes of harsh repression against them. As a result, Kurdish resistance movements have cropped up throughout the last century; aiming to defend themselves and their cultural identity. The aims of these resistance movements have vacillated from outright independence to gaining greater autonomy.

With about 40 million people, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group without their own state, but why? The Kurds' settlement area spans many countries, but most of them live in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. A Kurdistan encompassing most of this population would stretch across many states and take up large portions of their territory, and that's where we come to our problem because none of these states have any interest in giving up territory. Turkey, for example, could lose up to 18% of its population, a huge chunk of land, and the resources that go with it.
And since Kurdistan would span so many states, it is in the interest of all these states not to allow a Kurdish independence movement. Because once it establishes itself in one country, it could spread to other countries. For this reason, Turkey is fighting Kurdish forces even outside its borders, because it wants to prevent a Kurdish state that could eventually lay claim to much of Turkey's current territory.
Thus, a modern Kurdish state is unlikely to emerge any time soon, although it should be said that Kurds in northern Iraq do enjoy some autonomy.

The Republic of Mahabad (Kurdish: Komarî Mehabad), officially known as Republic of Kurdistan and established in Eastern Kurdistan ( Persian occupied Kurdistan ), was a short-lived, Kurdish state of the 20th century after the Republic of Ararat in Turkey. The capital was the city of Mahabad in northwestern of present Iran.
In August 1941, a general uprising wrested control of the Kurdish region from the central Iranian government. In the town of Mahabad, inhabited mostly by Kurds, a committee of middle-class people supported by tribal chiefs, took over the local administration. A political party called the Society for the Revival of Kurdistan (Komeley Jiyanewey Kurdistan or JK) was formed. Qazi Muhammad, head of a family of religious jurists, was elected as chairman of the party. Although the republic was not formally declared until December 1945, the committee headed by Qazi, administered the area with commendable efficiency and success for over five years until the fall of the republic.
Soviet and British forces occupied Iran in late August 1941, with the Soviets controlling the north. The Soviets were mainly ambivalent towards the Kurdish administration. They did not maintain a garrison near Mahabad and also did not have any civil agent of sufficient standing to exercise any great influence. They encouraged Qazi's administration by practical benevolent operations such as providing motor transport, keeping out the Iranian army, and buying the whole of the tobacco crop. They opposed the declaration of a separate independent Kurdish republic.
In September 1945, Qazi Muhammad and other Kurdish leaders visited Tabriz to see a Soviet consul on the backing of a new republic, and were then redirected to Baku, Azerbaijan SSR. There, they learned that the Azerbaijan Democrat Party was planning to take control of Iranian Azerbaijan. On December 10, the Azerbaijan Democrat Party took control of East Azerbaijan province from Iranian government forces. Qazi Muhammad decided to do the same, and on December 15, the Kurdish People's Government was founded in Mahabad. On January 22, 1946, Qazi Muhammad announced the formation of the Republic of Mahabad.
On June 1946, Iran reasserted its control over Iranian Azerbaijan. This move isolated the Republic of Mahabad, eventually leading to its destruction. They closed down the Kurdish printing press, banned the teaching of Kurdish language, and burned all Kurdish books that they could find. Finally, on March 31, 1947, Qazi Muhammad was hanged in Mahabad on counts of treason
In October 1958, Mustafa Barzani returned to Northern Iraq, beginning a series of struggles to fight for an independent Kurdish state under the KDP party, carrying the same flag that was used in Mahabad.
Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, Jr., grandson of the former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, wrote in "The Kurdish Republic of Mahabad" that a main problem of the People's Republic of Mahabad was that the Kurds needed the assistance of the USSR; only with the Red Army did they have a chance. But this close relationship to Stalin and the USSR caused most of the Western powers to side with Iran. Qazi Muhammad, though not denying the fact that they were funded and supplied by the Soviets, denied that the KDP was a Communist party, stating this was a lie fabricated by the Iranian military authorities, and adding that his ideals were very different from the Soviets.

Around 35 million Kurdish reside in the mountainous regions located at the borders of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Armenia.
During the rise of the Ottoman empire, the Kurds were promised a separate homeland. When the borders of modern Turkey and its neighbours were drawn there was no more talk of an independent Kurdistan.

Small groups of Kurdish men and women from Iran are camped out in the mountains of Iraq. The exiles have joined armed resistance units and are determined to fight the Iranian regime.
The documentary follows the fate of Kurds who have taken to the mountains over the Iraqi border after fleeing Iran. Some belong to the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iran. Targeted by Iranian rocket and drone attacks, the armed groups hide out in secret camps. Iran’s high-tech surveillance systems also make it extremely difficult to stay in touch with their relatives back home. Some of the resistance fighters played a leading role in the protest movement sparked by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. The young Kurdish woman died after being detained by Iran’s so-called morality police for allegedly breaching the country’s mandatory hijab laws for women. Last year, Tehran issued the Iraqi government in Baghdad with an ultimatum, setting them a deadline to disarm Kurdish opposition groups and relocate them from the border. But some refuse to leave.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Kurdistan in Eastern Kurdistan with Mahabad as its capital and Qazi Mohammed as its president.
During the Second World War, Western Iran was occupied by the Soviet Union and Great Britain in 1941. The intention behind it was to create supply routes to the Soviet Union and to prevent Reza Shah Pahlavi from taking the side of the Axis powers. Beginning from that time, the Soviets supported the Kurds and Azeris to become independent from the central Iranian government. As a result, Qazi Mohammed declared the foundation of the Republic of Kurdistan on Chiwarchira square on 22 January 1946, three days after the foundation of the People’s Republic of Azarbaijan. The Democratic Party of Kurdistan-Iran (DPKI), chaired by Qazi Mohammed, presented the government of the state, and a parliament of 13 members was formed.
The government was headed by Qazi Mohammed and had the following positions and persons:

War and Defense Minister: Mohammed Hossein Saif Qazi
Interior Minister: Mohammed Amin Mouini
Health Minister: Mohammed Eiubian
Minister without portfolio: Abdul Rahman Ilchanizadeh
Transport Minister: Ismail Ilchanizadeh
Finance Minister: Ahmed Ilahi
Minister for Cultural Affairs: Manaf Karimi
Minister of Agriculture: Mahmud Valizadeh
Propaganda Minister: Sadik Haidari
Minister of Labor: Khalil Khosrowi
Justice Minister: Mullah Hossein Madschi
At the time of the foundation of the republic, more than 3,000 Barzani fighters led by Molla Mustafa Barzani came to Mahabad from Southern Kurdistan to join the republic and form its official army. The official national anthem was Ey Reqîb and Ala Rengîn (colorful flag) became its flag.
In April and May, there were several clashes between the Kurds and the Iranian army. However, these were initially ended by a cease-fire. This led to negotiations between the Iranian government and the Kurds with the participation of Great Britain. The negotiations did not lead to any results, so the Iranian troops kept attacking Kurdish positions. After the withdrawal of the Soviet army, the Republic of Kurdistan was captured by Iran on 16 December 1946. On 30 March 1947, Qazi Mohammed, Seyfi Qazi, and Sedri Qazi were executed on Chiwarchira Square in Mahabad.
According to Archibald Roosevelt (son of US President Theodore Roosevelt), the republic crashed because the Kurds were dependent on the protection of the Soviet Union. They did not have the material to assert themselves, even if there were plans to supply the Kurds with the necessary military goods. Another decisive reason was the disunity between the Kurdish tribes at that time.

The Kurds are one of the world’s largest ethnic groups without a nation-state. Instead they are spread across four Middle Eastern countries, being a significant minority in each one. This has left them vulnerable to the centralising efforts of each government. Subsequently, Kurds across the region have complained about a lack of ability to express their cultural rights and autonomy. Not to mention, there have been several episodes of harsh repression against them. As a result, Kurdish resistance movements have cropped up throughout the last century; aiming to defend themselves and their cultural identity. The aims of these resistance movements have vacillated from outright independence to gaining greater autonomy.

With about 40 million people, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group without their own state, but why? The Kurds' settlement area spans many countries, but most of them live in Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. A Kurdistan encompassing most of this population would stretch across many states and take up large portions of their territory, and that's where we come to our problem because none of these states have any interest in giving up territory. Turkey, for example, could lose up to 18% of its population, a huge chunk of land, and the resources that go with it.
And since Kurdistan would span so many states, it is in the interest of all these states not to allow a Kurdish independence movement. Because once it establishes itself in one country, it could spread to other countries. For this reason, Turkey is fighting Kurdish forces even outside its borders, because it wants to prevent a Kurdish state that could eventually lay claim to much of Turkey's current territory.
Thus, a modern Kurdish state is unlikely to emerge any time soon, although it should be said that Kurds in northern Iraq do enjoy some autonomy.
